White Vinegar
Also known as: Distilled vinegar, Acetic acid solution
Acidic cleaner that cuts grease and kills most bacteria. Dilute 1:1 with water for general cleaning.
How it works
White vinegar is typically 5-8% acetic acid (CH3COOH) in water. Its cleaning power comes from its acidity:
Dissolving mineral deposits: Acidic pH breaks down alkaline scale (calcium carbonate) in kettles, showerheads, and taps. The reaction converts solid calcium carbonate to soluble calcium acetate.
Cutting grease: Acids break the bonds in fatty acids, making greasy residue water-soluble.
Antimicrobial: The low pH (2.4-3.4) kills most bacteria and some moulds. It's effective against E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria on surfaces.
The smell: Acetic acid is volatile. It evaporates completely as the surface dries, taking the smell with it. This is unlike synthetic fragrances which leave residue.
Uses
- -Glass and mirror cleaning — streak-free shine
- -Descaling kettles and showerheads
- -Fabric softener replacement — neutralises detergent residue
- -General surface cleaner — 1:1 with water
- -Mould removal — stronger concentration
Why we recommend it
Cheap, effective, no synthetic chemicals. The smell dissipates completely as it dries, unlike fragrance chemicals which persist.

Caution
Don't use on marble, granite, or other natural stone — acid damages them. Don't mix with bleach.
