Lemon
Also known as: Citrus limon, Lemon juice
Natural acid and antibacterial. The citric acid cuts grease and dissolves mineral deposits.
How it works
Lemons contain 5-6% citric acid (C6H8O7), giving them a pH of 2-3. They also contain d-limonene, a natural solvent.
Citric acid: Like vinegar, it dissolves mineral scale and cuts through grease by breaking fatty acid bonds. It's slightly weaker than acetic acid but smells better.
D-limonene: This terpene is a powerful natural solvent extracted from citrus peel. It dissolves oils, adhesive residue, and many organic compounds. It's the active ingredient in many "natural" cleaning products.
Antibacterial: The low pH and limonene both contribute to antibacterial action. Studies show lemon juice is effective against several foodborne pathogens.
Bleaching: Citric acid combined with sunlight (photochemical reaction) can lighten stains on fabric and cutting boards.
